Every year Hallmark issues a new Legends of Football Hallmark Keepsake holiday ornament. I have been a Hallmark ornament collector for many years and have many players from this series. In the past great players from Joe Montana John Elway Joe Namath Brett Favre Jerry Rice Kurt Warner and Emmet Smith have been featured as legends. All of them are.
Where I question Hallmarks label of legend comes from what seems to be the opportunity to capitalize on popular players of the day rather than providing the honor to a play that really deserves it. This year's legend is Tony Romo. Are you kidding me? Have they looked at this guy's play off record--a record that clearly shows he is incapable of winning the big games that turn names into legends.
Of course this isn't the first year Hallmark has elevated a player into legend status. In 2005 the called Michael Vick a legend. Yeah he's a legend alright--in the most infamous way. He has never been a legend on the field. Sure he can scramble but he never advanced Atlanta to a championship game.
I just wonder when the people in Kansas City will truly recognize football's legends. Heck there are few to play in Kansas City. We can start with Len Dawson. Maybe that probably is pushing it for sales. Why not Terry Bradshaw? He's a high-profile guy who is still active in the league. Those 70s Steelers are still what drives the modern Steelers. Is it right the Ben Roethlisberger received the Hallmarks legend moniker before Bradshaw? I don't think so. Give me those 70s Steelers any day. They won four. Roethlisberger still has a way to go.
Obviously Dallas is popular with the artists in Kansas City. Why has Roger Staubach or Tony Dorsett been overlooked. Let's face it Romo is no Staubach. When I think of the Cowboys I always see those Tom Landry led team when the offense was perfectly synchronized to down and set. Landry's discipline was art on the field.
I just don't get this whole Romo/legend thing. I doubt many get it either which is why the day after Christmas most of these things will be sold at any Hallmark store at 50% off only to wind up on e-Bay in mass. Unfortunately Hallmark lowers the meaning of legend for commercialism. Tony Romo doesn't deserve a spot on my Christmas tree. I tell you what I would rather have but of course the NFL and the media prevented it. I would rather have Rush Limbaugh Legendary Owner of an NFL team ornament than a Romo ornament. Now that would be legendary.
